Where Do I Go From Here?

On some level, we’ve all had conversations with ourselves about how to move up in the world of employment, whether from a position change, a raise, promotion, or career change. When we first are looking to enter the workforce, we are asked, “So you have your diploma, what now?” or “What do you want to be when you grow up.” A few of us find that magical career that carries us through our lives and into retirement. Others learn after starting that what we’ve chosen isn’t something we envisioned or expected. No matter what path you are on now, there are a few things to keep in mind as you go through your journey in the workforce.

Be Coachable

With any position, one important thing I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) is to be coachable. We can all picture that certain someone who seems to think they are the smartest in the room, and definitely have everything figured out – right? Oddly enough, I have not met or heard of a single person that knows everything. I have met, however, and learned about many successful people who all have one thing in common – they all have a curious mindset and want to learn. Being coachable and being open to those opportunities in your career will not only help you grow your skills, but that will get you noticed for promotions and wage increases.

Seek Professional Development

Being coachable in your career goes hand in hand with seeking professional development. Change is a constant no matter the industry you are in. Building knowledge in your core competencies as well as continuous leadership training will only help you grow and reach the potential you are seeking professionally. It’s one thing to attend the events, receive the certifications and watch the webinar. The real benefit comes from applying those skills to help you grow your mindset and skillset. Those are great tools and examples to bring forth in interviews to showcase your ability to grow and learn.

Yes, Networking!

It’s crazy now, but with the increased need of employees out there, many employers are hiring through referrals. Networking can be a gamechanger and can lead to opportunities you may not have known about otherwise. Networking can tell you a lot about companies and the people that work there. Maybe that company and the culture completely align with you, and on the flip side, the people you may connect with could show you a different side to the position posted on the job boards. Be curious about everyone you encounter and own your network! We are most comfortable with those who are similar to us, yes, but that’s not how we grow. We need to have people from all perspectives around us to help us see things in a different way.

If you are just starting out in the workforce, or maybe you are making a change after 20 years, it may feel like there’s an uphill battle ahead. Look for ways to learn from those around you, be curious about professional development, and start with Preference! We are a great resource to help you get connected with the careers and companies in the Fargo-Moorhead area.
