What Wellness Means to Preference

According to SHRM’s 2022 Employee Benefits Survey, 41 percent of employers provide wellness resources and information currently. There is a greater need to take care of our employees in addition to paying fair and reasonable wages.

“By offering employees the means and the educational tools to take control of their wellness, employers promote a healthier, more productive work environment. A well-executed program can reduce health care costs, augment productivity and increase employee retention, providing further support for the correlation between personal health and job satisfaction.” (SHRM)

In this tight market, what can we do to continually show our appreciation for our employees who are our most valuable asset? At Preference, we had the opportunity to create a small committee devoted to building a Preference Wellness Program for our internal employee owners. When sitting down to determine what a Wellness Program would look like, we were overwhelmed. Wellness means something different to everyone, where do you even start?

How do you create something that influences and gives back to each and every employee in your organization?

We focused on building a program that outlines the 8 dimensions of wellness: Emotional, Occupational, Intellectual, Environmental, Financial, Social, Physical and Spiritual. We organized some exciting events, speakers and activities for our team in our pilot year of our Wellness Program. Our goal is to empower our employees to unlock our own potential and by doing so be better for our clients and employees.

Our team thrives on competition, so we introduced a point system to encourage participation and collaboration with added incentives. Employees can earn rewards such as 2 extra hours off, a healthy meal, a walk at a local gym, or even up to 8 additional hours of PTO, all designed to keep things engaging and fun.

In 2024, we dedicated each quarter to focusing on different aspects of wellness. We kicked off the year by introducing our “Zen Den,” a peaceful space designed for quick resets and moments of quiet escape from our busy days. We also revamped “The Cove,” a dedicated area for nursing mothers, complete with a mini fridge for added convenience. Throughout the year, we embraced activities like meditation, yoga, and projects centered around giving back and nurturing our spirituality. Additionally, we explored cold plunges and dream-focused sessions, featuring guest speakers who facilitated meaningful conversations and connections.

We are kicking off 2025’s wellness initiatives this week, and we couldn’t be more excited! The theme for this year’s program is “Intentional,” focusing on purposeful actions to support well-being in every aspect of life. From financial to emotional wellness and all dimensions in between, we’ve been thrilled to start this journey with our internal team. Our goal is to continue developing this program and expand its impact as a valuable resource for our clients, employees, and colleagues in the staffing, recruiting and PEO industries.
